Hilarious, I loved reading this. We have all these birds and the descriptions are so true. You may get dunnocks as well and once you see the males pre-mating move - I won't describe it here! - you can't un-see it.

Thanks Nick! Ah yes, I've seen dunnocks in the vicinity (very tuneful!) but not clocked any on the feeder yet. I will keep my eyes peeled for any amorous hijinks.

Enjoyed this so much Dan. You describe them so well! I too have embraced the delights of the bird feeder, in a long string of middle aged maneuvers. We've had 14 species on ours so far here in Southmead!

Glad you enjoyed it, Andrew! 14 species, that's a good haul. It's getting rather busy this time of year.

The exotic stuff - chaffinch, nut hatch, jay, gold finch - were all during winter. Our mealworms brought all the birds to the yard! And they're like, this is better than just fat balls.

Interesting. I've not ventured into mealworms yet. I'll add them to the list, after building a bird bath and bee hotel.

This is an awesome summary and great witty writing! Reading it out to Dad as we’re sitting watching the starlings brawling over the bird feeder in the garden! 😆

😘

The starlings are out in force this week, now with fledglings too.
